Remembering Our State's Past One Story At A Time
New Jersey's
Forgotten History
The Telegraph
Prior to the 20th Century, communicating was difficult and slow. Letters ent on sailing ships or through the pony express took ages to get to their destination. How did humanity go from writing letters to texting, calling, and skyping? Because of New Jersey's inventor, Alfred Vail.
On Speedwell Ave, in Morristown, NJ, engineer Alfred Vail made history with Samuel Morse when they demonstrated their first electro-magnetic telegraph in 1838.
This program will discuss Vail and his invention as well as the inherent importance and evolution of telecommunications through the present day.
